Network Problem after Update


I am running Debian Unstable and KDE4.
After a routine updating session on Friday my PC developed a strange problem.

When I boot I have internal network access but no internet access. At this point my /etc/interfaces file contains:

auto eth6
iface eth6 inet static
address 192.168.2.13
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.2.1

#auto eth6
#iface eth6 inet dhcp
If I comment out the top 5 lines, uncomment the last 2, then do ifdown and Ifup eth6 I get my internet access back.

Then if I reverse the process I still have internet access.

Route gives the same outbut for both situations

Up to this moment I am fully updated except for the new kernel and 4 python modules which want to delete gnome-games and a couple of other packages.

I'd file a bug report if I knew which package to file against.

Can anybody help please?

So what you're saying, in effect, is that dhcp works, but the static address doesn't, *until* its been assigned by dhcp. It sounds like dhcp is working OK then. Have you looked at your logs in /var/log to see what happens when it tries to assign the static address in the first place? There may be an error there.

Its got to be worth saying, that you are running *unstable* - I run testing, & that still has the odd blip.

Hi davcefai

The same happened to me!
I found /etc/resolv.conf being empty after update.
filling in the lines

search (Your domain)
nameserver .....
naemserver .....
domain (your domain)

solved the problem for me.

grhh: You are right. My resolv.conf file is being emptied at every reboot, but not when I run ifdown and if up.

I have filed a bug report against network-manager.

andywebsdale: yes, I expect glitches. They are a learning mechanism and I can contribute a little back to the community by (occasionally) helping to solve them, or replying to others on this forum.
