Network Manager

Hi! I run Debian Lenny on an external HD. I just updated everything. However, using the Gnome Network Manager, it has no tab for dsl. I use the same nm in Fedora and Ubuntu. They have this tab to add a dsl connection. Why is it not present in Debian. I tried WICD, but it too had no dsl capability. Does Debian separate the two? I have downloaded a pppoe package, it is command line. I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Why is it not integrated in Gnome nm?
In the library I have a fixed ip on a wired network. But at home I have dsl, and can't connect under Debian.

There's your problem. Try
Code:
ifconfig -a
to see if Debian recognises your NIC. I think it does, and that means you'd need to install a DHCP client, so your box can ask the router for an IP address...

Thanks
The point is, I run the same gnome nm under Fed and Ubuntu, without a problem. Gnome say, with this nm you will always have a connection, without any fuss. I just set my username and password in the dsl tab of the nm, and done. This is hard in Debian, because there is no dsl tab under edit connections. Maybe this is a root thingy. How do I call up nm as root? Or make myself as normal user able to edit nm or any network connections?
I can't run the command right now, but I will later on. I don't have the external HD at hand.

Well, that is a stupid thing for Gnome to say.

Is your dsl pppoe? If so, do you have the pppoe package installed?

Please notice that debian stable has nm v0.6.6 in the main repo, while ubuntu has v0.8 in 9.10, v0.7.1 in 9.04 and so on.

Last time I had to use nm was on ubuntu 8.04 to setup a similar connection. It was nm v 0.6.6 and I am sure it did not have such option.

Please consider installing v0.7.2 from the backports repo.

Can you tell me please what to add to the repo list? I suppose I don't have the backports repo.
Or just download the newest package from Gnome?

For adsl connections I used pppoeconf at the command line. It worked well.

Something like that I assume
Code:
deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/backports.org/ lenny-backports main contrib non-free
All backport mirrors are listed here. Change sarge to lenny
http://www.backports.org/debian/README.mirrors.html
