Netinstall 8.8 root password not working
Just did a clean net-install of Debian 8.8
in that install I set the root pwd and a normal-user pwd. I can login as that normal user, 'su -' then rejects the root pwd with "su: Authentication failure". On googling I found the "reboot to single user mode process" to reset a root pwd. So I followed that. (boot, hit ESC, edit boot params, mount /, run passwd to set root pwd, reboot). Still same problem. also checked /bin/su, it is -rwsr-xr-x Is there a root login issue on this version? Or is there something new about this version that I am missing? Obviously I need root access to setup sudo (and do some other stuff) --------------- Update .... how silly of me Found I had an old file in my home-dir of my normal user. the file was a remnant of an older way of setting up my environment and it was called 'su'. How silly that is. It takes some trying 'obvious' causes to find it and that is not immediately what one thinks of when installing a fresh OS. |
Hi kschut, and welcome to LQ.
I'm glad you resolved the problem in the end. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. ;) Could you please mark this thread as "Solved" (see "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread). Cheers. |
Cannot mark as SOLVED
I do not have the option "Mark as Solved" under thread tools. I am logged in to the forum, though.

What options do you have in the Thread Tools menu when looking at this thread?
|
double solved
aha, now I do have that option to set SOLVED.
