Need IDE Controller Drivers for Debian Install

Hi,

I tried installing Debian3 but the installation program couldn't see either of my hard drives behind my PROMISE Technology Ultra66 IDE controller. (A friend and) I've tried rearranging my drives so the two HDDs connect directly to the motherboard, but no matter how they're set up, they're not accessible otherwise.

The installer asked for IDE controller drivers on a floppy, if I had them, so my task is now: finding PROMISE Ultra66 IDE controller Debian drivers.

Could anyone please enlighten me as to where I can find these (or perhaps an alternative method of installing that would work)?

the hard drive drivers are built into the kernel, so it should just work without extra effort.

debian 3.0 woody is particularly difficult to install and use for new users.

you want to use debian 3.1 sarge (this version is currently in sort of a release candidate mode, and will be stable sometime this month). get the sarge installer from

www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer

Hmm, 3.1 would have better support for my IDE controller?

I ask this because usually in a minor version update (ie 3.0 to 3.1) it would unusual for driver collections or installers to be improved...

don't let the minor number fool you. 3.1 is 2 years in the making (3.0 was released in 2002). debian is on a very very slow release cycle. it's not like microsoft where a version increment of about 2000 isn't unheard of.

the difference between 3.0 and 3.1 is just incredible. that's 2 years worth of new developments and support for new hardware, etc.

use the debian-installer link above to download the net iso to install debian 3.1. i think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
