Question Need help with sidux

I posted this at the sidux forums and was basically told to install KDE-base by one person and to not ask for help on XFCE by another ...... maybe someone here can give me some advice without being rude ..... I've used various Linux distros since 2003, but I haven't got the learning capacity to know how to figure out what's wrong in some situations ... that's why I come to forums, to learn, not to be slammed for my lack of expertise. I don't go back to forums that are rude to those who may not be as technologically adept as others, and I've always been treated well here, that's why I'm back.

Quote:
After a few months of fighting with a crazy computer, I've dumped it off on my wife to use for her WNDOZ - XP. I'm back with a Dell laptop with the latest sidux on it and it's good to be back. I do, however, have some problems.
1. The navigation bar has no navigation history on it, even for the current session.
2. and I'm finding it difficult to respond to forums ........ I'm not sure that I'll be able to post this one .... I can login OK, and reply to a topic, but when I select "submit" it gives me a blank page and tells me I have to enter a post before I submit .....
3. I cannot use the html tags or the smilies by using the buttons provided, I'll try putting them in by hand.

I've tried this on four different forums (including the sidux forums), so I know it's not a problem with the forum, it's got to be in my OS. I have been able to post a couple of PMs on USALUG.org, but not topic replies .... for that I have to use my Arch box.

4. I downloaded a file and put it on the desktop, it shows up there as an icon, but I can't open it up, ....... but when I try to delete it, it says there is no file to delete, and when I look in the file manager, it doesn't show that file on the Desktop.

Any advice?

I'm using the XFCE4 with KDE-lite
Laptop is Dell D600 (other than that, I don't know a lot about the particulars of this lappy, I just got it, thanks to a couple of fine friends).
NOTE: I've used Libranet, Slackware, Mepis, Xandros, Beatrix, sidux, Knoppix, Puppy and Arch as well as others, but I am by no means an expert on any of them. So if this sidux is damaged beyond repair, I can replace it with an older sidux (Eros) for which I still have the CD.

Welcome to the forums!
I have never used sidux so i cannot give you specifics for you.

I would like to make a series of comments because I feel you have unjustly accussed one forum and not given the correct info so possibly misleading us sweet LQ forum users.

I am a member of both forums and ignoring that I have time zone difference to you....I can see that relative to me this post is dated
11 aug 12:03.

At the sidux forum, the person who I think you are accussing of being rude? was questioned by an estemmed forum member on the XFCE issue.

11 aug 05:36

Leaping ahead by 12:03 at sidux forum, a number of your posts and other looks like that alleged rude person had been dealt with.

Leaping further ahead...it appears that your description of what distro you were using was (and IMHO is) misleading.

----------------

Feel free to report me, if you think I am being rude...but I am stating facts and the post I refer to is here

http://www.sidux.com/index.php?name=...crazy+computer

---------------------------------------------------------------

2) Now the better stuff.

Everyone is free to choose distros.

But certain distros that offer cut down iso such as KDE-lite and XFCE are crudely those for people who either can not not do big downloads or need less bloat...as KDE full is bloat...(I use it) or they have small hard drives or they are looking for a boot up speed enhancement such as using XFCE.

3) If you are unsure of the Debian Policy...using what we both might call user friendly codecs, drivers etc....you are free to run different software.

I run full KDE but the generic mozilla firefox with the generic java but the sidux Konqueror.

If you want a hand to run these, at this forum, I can help.

If you do not like me pointing out certain facts as I see it....feel free to ignore me.

IMHO you may be better off, with less hassle on sidux KDE full dvd i386 which will give you a Debian style java, Firefox etc.

good luck

11 aug 12:03. As you can see, I'm a member of both forums too On the sidux forum it says

At the sidux forum, the person who I think you are accussing of being rude? was questioned by an estemmed forum member on the XFCE issue. I wasn't cussing anyone and yes, he was corrected for his rudeness concerning XFCE, but the fact still remains that he was rude in his post concerning if I knew what I was doing. I hardly think that's the way to treat someone who doesn't have the computer skills that the poster has .... If you don't want to help someone, I would think it's better to say nothing at all.

11 aug 05:36 His answer ?

a number of your posts and other looks like that alleged rude person had been dealt with. And your point is?
Look, I don't necessarily go to different forums in a certain order ... I may not get a chance to go back to a forum for several days sometimes, I'm not on the Internet 24/7, I do have a life . I rarely go to the sidux forums because of the rudeness of some of the posters. I do better on IRC.

Leaping further ahead ...The last post of the thread?

...it appears that your description of what distro you were using was (and IMHO is) misleading. I don't know how I was misleading anyone, but if that's your take on it, you're welcome to think that. I said I am using sidux and I am; I said it was sent to me with KDE and it was; I said I had installed XFCE and I did ..... what's misleading?? ...... I did not say that I used the XFCE ISO version, and that is plainly stated. As well, if you look closely, this all took place over a 3 day period, the 10th, the 11th, and the 12th.

----------------

Feel free to report me, if you think I am being rude...but I am stating facts which are skewed to your point of view, and no, I'm not interested in "reporting" anyone and the post I refer to is here

http://www.sidux.com/index.php?name=...crazy+computer

---------------------------------------------------------------

2) Now the better stuff.

Everyone is free to choose distros. I chose sidux, and it sounds like you did too!

But certain distros that offer cut down iso such as KDE-lite and XFCE are crudelyHuh? those for people who either can not not do big downloads or need less bloat...as KDE full is bloat...(I use it) or they have small hard drives or they are looking for a boot up speed enhancement such as using XFCE. I happen to like XFCE

3) If you are unsure of the Debian Policy...using what we both might call user friendly codecs, drivers etc....you are free to run different software. Thanks, that's why I run sidux with the apps that I like, not necessarily what a dev likes - apt-get remove is a wonderful tool !

I run full KDE but the generic mozilla firefox with the generic java but the sidux Konqueror.

If you want a hand to run these, at this forum, I can help. No thanks, as I pointed out to richard on the sidux forums, I don't like KDE

If you do not like me pointing out certain facts as I see it....feel free to ignore me.

IMHO you may be better off, with less hassle on sidux KDE full dvd i386 which will give you a Debian style java, Firefox etc. NO Thanks

good luck
I can't believe that you took the time to make such a long post just to castigate me for what you perceive to be misleading and dishonest statements. You didn't even attempt to give any helpful advice to make sidux or xfce work better, you just worried yourself that I might have cussed a forum that you are a member of and somehow mislead you, yet you took the time to search the sidux forums to find the thread I was referring to. Amazing !!!! Your whole post was much ado about nothing!
In your post you gave no help as far as my dilemma with the problems I'm having ...... just like the poster who was rude, no help at all, just your opinion concerning a post and a rude answer from someone on another forum, although I do have to acknowledge that you offered to help .... IF I wanted to do it your way ..... I do appreciate the person who helped me here (watcher69b) as well as those who helped on the sidux forums, and that's what I came here for ...... help, not criticism.

I'll bother you no further, aus9, if I ask any other questions here, you have my permission to ignore them Thanks for your post.

I only know RPM enabled OSes but for them you would
open a terminal
type

rpm -q java <enter>

or

rpm -q <appname>

Hi IM2Slick, please don't let one "rude" person spoil your experience at the sidux forums, all forums have "rude" people and all OS's.

To find out what version of java you are running do (as user)
Code:
java -version
To configure java do (as root)
Code:
update-alternatives --config java
and should look something like
Code:
There are 5 alternatives which provide `java'.

  Selection Alternative
-----------------------------------------------
          1 /usr/bin/gij-4.3
          2 /usr/bin/gij-4.2
          3 /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java
 + 4 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java
*         5    /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java

Press enter to keep the default[*], or type selection number:
I use #5 as default. That is "if" java is indeed the problem, I don't use xfce4 as much as I used too, but, I myself don't see the problems that you are seeing. You can always come join us at #sidux (oftc) for live help and heavier xfce users.

Hey piper, good to see you here. I had hoped that you would have been available at the sidux forums, (you were probably somewhere between Baltimore and Miami  ) but at least I can still get some help from you here. I will try those suggestions and get back to you.

BTW, this was the second post that I had done where I was spoken to in the same manner ..... a couple of other posters were offended that I preferred XFCE to KDE, but their posts were not near as harsh. As I said above, I feel that if a person isn't willing to help, he should just say nothing at all I'll get back to you on the suggestions. THANX

Code:
jp@jpsd600:~$ java -version
java version "1.6.0_07"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_07-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b23, mixed mode, sharing)
jp@jpsd600:~$
Code:
root@jpsd600:/home/jp# update-alternatives --config java

There is only 1 program which provides java
(/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java). Nothing to configure.
root@jpsd600:/home/jp#
Piper, I didn't get the selection of the alternatives ..... I have had pages come up that say I need to enable java, but I wasn't aware that I really needed java
