Lightbulb Need advice setting up mailserver

Hi,

I need some advice on which type of mailserver to install.

It should be used for let's say 20-30 domains with each a max of 15 mailboxes...

I read all kind of stuff about sendmail and postfix, some say postfix had less security issues in the past and is therefore better than sendmail ?

I don't care if configuration is more difficult with say sendmail than postfix, I want a good mailserver that I can rely and learn from.

the distro i'm running is latest stable debian kernel 2.6.10

machine :

supermicro P8sci
socket 775 Celeron 2.66
DDR2 ram 512mb Kingston
ipmi 2.0 Controller

The link I have is a shared 100 Mbit with fast response times

thx a lot

what do you mean by 20-30 domains? Do you mean like "www.domain1.com" "www.domain2.com", etc? Or do you mean individual hosts that are in your network, eg machine1.domain.com, machine2.domain.com?

Both situations will require a dns as well as a mailserver. However, implimentation of the actual mailserver will differ depending on what you hope to accomplish.

You will want to start by setting up your DNS, making sure that your MX records will be pointing to wherever you want them to go. My network is set up so that any mail directed to anything within [x].mycomputer.campusnetwork.umd.edu is sent to mail.mycomputer.campusnetwork.umd.edu. All my mail is collected there and store there for retrevial later. Then again, I'm only one user with 7 computers.

After you set up DNS, edit your mailserver to receive mail from the outside world, and you should be set to go.

Hi,

Thx for replying to my post,

By domains I meant www.xxxxxx.com and other kinds of domain extensions, I allready have bind installed and configged as well as the mx records.

I'm just a bit lost on wether to use sendmail or postfix and would need some advice on that one...

Within 5 years there is a possibility I will have + 100 domains and lets say + 200 users that fetch their mail...

thx

I personally use sendmail and have not had much problems. sendmail is the most prevelant, and you'll probably get much more support. I would think that setting up for 100 people would be the same as 10...just need extra precautions.
