MySQL server installation on Debian

I have a new installation of Debian woody, upgraded to 2.4.26. I ran apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client, and it appears to install properly and without complaint until the very end when it tries to start the daemon, and the following occurs:

# /etc/init.d/mysql restart
Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld
Starting MySQL database server: mysqld...failed
#

I've repeated the install numerous times and tried other variations, all to the same result. I can't get the MySQL server running. No logs appear to be created that explains what happened, at least that I can find. Any suggestions?

If it was my box and I didn't know what was going on, I would try
Code:
find /var/log |xargs grep mysqld
to search within log files. Maybe you already tried that, but I can't imagine it not logging something somewhere. You may need to give grep a -h switch to show file names.

Good luck.

Havent really tryed apt-getting mysql, ive allways build from source. Its quite easy if you follow installation instuctions AND post installation instructions HERE and use some brain

but try to:
su
mysqld --user=mysql

if you cant be arsed building it, try in case to follow post installation instruction anyway, they might help
