MySQL Daemon doesn't run

hi,

I have installed mysql 4.1 and I can start the database manually and everything works fine. Now I want to start the database on boot. So I have copied the server.mysql file to the init.d directory and the accociated rc.d directories. When I run the script in the init.d directory it starts mysql fine. When I reboot the machine I get nothing! Mysql does not start and I don't know where to look to find out what is wrong. I have check the message log and there is nothing there. It seems as thought the script isn't being run at all!!

Can anyone help.

Thanks in advance
Stephen

I am assuming you have installed the mysql-server-4.1 package.
The package should have installed this file (taken from dpkg -L mysql-server-4.1 | head)

/etc/init.d/mysql

And these files are symlinks to it
./rc0.d/K20mysql
./rc2.d/S20mysql
./rc6.d/K20mysql
plus others in the other runlevels.

I dont know if "dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-4.1" will add these links but it won't do any harm.
If it is disabled (in a config file somewhere) then typing
"/etc/init.d/mysql start"
as root might give a reason
