multiple mysql servers on 1 server

I'm about to be using multiple mysql servers running on 1 server, the reason for this is, I want to use the replication feature of MySQL to replicate some masters to this 1 slave.. (the slave is a webserver of wich 'some' databases get populated by other MySQL servers)

I can start 1 server on port 3306 fine (each has it's own pid, sock and datadir), but when I want the 2nd (or 3rd, ...) server to start, the only way to get it working is by starting it from the command line (mysqld with all the options).

Am I overlooking anything or is there no easier (cleaner?) way? I have been looking through the site and found the use of 1 cnf is possible, but I cannot get the mysql init script adjusted properly.

Thanks for any hints..

Ps: distro is Debian sarge.

Ouch, it 'is' a tough question?
Any opinions or pointers more than welcome. (just start mysqld --with-parameters seems so 'dirty' to me)
