Mouse too slow in Gnome

Hi, my Intellimouse explorer mouse speed is much too slow in Gnome (compared to Windows).

I've tried adjusting the acceleration using the gnome mouse applet but this either makes things too fast or even slower.

Is there a way to increase mouse speed in general without adjusting acceleration? Is there a different setting to adjust somewhere outside gnome?

I fixed my own problem

The solution is to add a new Option to XF86Config-4, under the mouse section
Option "Resolution" "256"

I bought a Labtec optical mouse a week ago and it's been kinda shaky, however I did as Oof recommended but set "Resolution" to 400. Wow, I can't beleive the difference in how well it now works. Thanks oof.
