Mounting usb pen drive file permssions problems

Debian likes to automatcally change the file permissions of the mount point of my usb pen drive. It always changes it to root when I use the mount command

sh-3.00$ mkdir /mnt/ntfs
sh-3.00$ mkdir /mnt/usb
sh-3.00$ mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
mount: only root can do that
sh-3.00$ su
Password:
debian:/home/sc# mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/usb
debian:/home/sc# ls /mnt/usb
cv.sxw
debian:/home/sc# ls

I checked the file permissions after i executed all those commands and the owner was root. Why does debian do this. I wasn't even logged in as root when I created the mount point? It's an fat file system am trying to mount

Is the Pendrive listed in your fstab? If not allowing anyone to mount an unspecified drive like that could possibly be a "security issue", which is likely why it defaults to root only.

when you put it into fstab, put "user" as one of the options for it, and then you should be able to read the files without needing root.
