module fglrx

hi, i have just installed the xfree86 window system and then installed ati's own drivers for my radeon x300 graphics card.

When i start x the following error occurs:

Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
No drivers available

No Screens Found.

Is this a module i need in the kernel? I am using kernel version 2.4.27. Do i need to re-compile the kernel with this module? Or is it something that just needs loading?

If so could someone tell me how to do this.

Thanks

The 2.6 kernel has an ATI driver built in (though it is not the best). You may try to update your kernel to the 2.6 kernel.

If the module will not load with "modprobe fglrx" then it is either not built correctly or not supported. Have you considered an updatre to a 2.6 kernel?

Did you use the "installer" or, did you install it manually?

You can install the fglrx driver by following the instructions at this page: http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.sta...installer.html
It has prebuilt debian packages as well as a guide to compiling them yourself.
This driver is (a repackaging of) the official ati linux driver and is faster and more robust than the free driver.
