When you ran the 'modprobe b44' command did you do it as root?
Like: sudo modprobe b44 and with out the quotes.
Or you can:
su -
[password]
modprobe b44
----------------------------------
Make sure the it loaded or not.
lsmod | grep b44
If nothing comes up then:
sudo lspci -v
and look for your card and the last line before the next card should say what driver it is using.
