Modprobe freezes system

I noticed then, randomly, my system freezes three or four times in a row.
I'm working and suddenly everything stops; after about 8 seconds I hear the hard disk working for a moment, the mouse cursor moves a little and immediately stops again for another 8 seconds, then again and again; after 4 times everything gets OK.

Keeping a shell windows open with the TOP command running I realized that when the above facts occur, the process modprobe gets full CPU time.

What can be the reason for this behaviour?

Thanks.

What module(s) is/are you trying to modprobe? The problem is probably with the module(s).
