Modifying GDM3 Login

Hello all. I am hoping someone might be able to help me. I was using an older version of Debian on a DLI 8300 Tablet that used a custom Login screen. The Tablet had to be sent off for repairs and came back with new hardware and now that version of Debian does not support the hardware. So naturally I upgraded to the newest secure version of Debian which now supports the Hardware. However the GNOME has been upgraded to GNOME 3 and the files I once changed are no longer there. So my question is this.

I need to set up a custom login screen that allows the user to remotely login to other linux desktops. So instead of logging into the tablet directly I would like to be able to select from a list of remote hosts and login to them directly.

I was going to copy over the .conf file in original gdm folder but that file doesnt exist in gdm3. Which files need to be modified in order to get the custom login I require?

The file must be /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf or /etc/gdm3/greeter.gsettings depending on what you wish to change.

That's what I figured and have been digging. Still having trouble making it to where a list of remote desktops appear at login and you select whcih remote desktop you want to log into.

What was the older version of Debian using to log in, and can you go back to that?

I don't use remote login, but when I upgraded to Wheezy I found some of the features I do use in gdm2 were not working in gdm3, despite still being listed in the documentation.

In the end I uninstalled gdm3 and replaced it with gdm2 from the Sqeeze repo, which turned out to be a very easy fix: the package for gdm3 is called gdm3 (not gdm [version 3] ), so Synaptic / Apt treats it as a different package and doesn't try to 'upgrade' from gdm [version 2].

Squeeze hada few ways to setup remote connections 1 was thru "Applications>>Preferences>>Remote Desktop" & the other was just as OP explained, but, those options aren't there anymore. I would assume it's within vnc4server other than that ssh with X11 forwarding.

Also I will say that if OP installed Squeeze & upgraded the settings will be retained as I can login to my system via remote as of today.
