Missing installed program

Sometime ago I installed gphoto2 and the KDE frontend for it digikam (installed via apt get install), last weekend I did a dist-upgrade and ended up with an upgraded KDE to 3.4.2 from
3.2.?? But I have just gone to use digikam and its gone.

I can find no trace of it on my PC, If I try to apt-get install digikam It
tells me it is not available and is called by another program, if I do the
same with gphoto2 it seems happy to let me do so (although I have not). I
have looked on the debian testing package list and can find no trace of
digikam, except for two .docs, which state they are non-free.

Am I to assume that due to the dist upgrade that digikam was removed and that
the latest version has not worked its way down to testing yet?? There certainly were no messages to suggest that digikam or gphoto2 were being removed

Currently a bunch of KDE-related stuff is missing in testing ('etch'). I don't know exactly why or when they'll come back but I'd guess they'll return soon... I'd guess they are pushing down new KDE stuff from unstable into testing and thus some dependencies cannot be immediately fulfilled and thus some packages disappear until they have been made to work with the new KDE stuff and there is a time delay for things to drop down into testing.

The digikam package is currently only available in stable ('sarge') and unstable ('sid').
Code:
$ apt-cache policy digikam
digikam:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.7.4-5
  Version table:
     0.7.4-5 0
        600 http://ftp.se.debian.org sid/main Packages
     0.7.2-2 0
        500 http://ftp.se.debian.org sarge/main Packages
So for now you'll have to either use the one from testing or the one from unstable. Considering the current KDE stuff is the same in testing and unstable, it shouldn't be an all too traumatic experience to take it from unstable.

Ok I can understand that but for two points, why was no indication given during the upgrade that digikam was being removed (and of course I don't know what else could be missing). Secondly if I can apt install from stable surely I will run into the same dependances problems as I would of run into if the upgrade had left digikam on my system?

Performing a dist-upgrade shows what packages will be removed, if any.
Example:
Code:
# apt-get dist-upgrade -t testing
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Calculating Upgrade... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libgc1 libsigc++-1.2-5c102 xlibmesa-glu xserver-xfree86
The following NEW packages will be installed:
...
The following packages will be upgraded:
...
241 upgraded, 44 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 172MB of archives.
After unpacking 98.3MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
And yes, if you want the digikam from stable you'll have to downgrade all it's dependencies to stable as well.
