Migtrating existing Debian install to RAID 1

I do consulting work for a business and they have 2 Debian servers. I'd like to get them set up with RAID 1 using mdadm but have had difficulty migrating the existing installs to this set up.

I've already tried creating a degraded RAID 1 array and booting to it, but udev does not initialize /dev/md0 fast enough at boot.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Also, does anyone know of a good guide on migrating an existing install to RAID 1 that I could study? Thanks.
