XMMS is good for audio, with lots of different plugins available. Xine, and MPlayer work very well for video. install Synaptic with apt-get first, and browse around.

In XMMS, go to Play, and then PlayAudioCD. Make sure you have the "xmms-cdread" plugin installed. If it isn't, do "apt-get install xmms-cdread". There's also probably more plugins you'd like to use. Install them the same way, or use Synaptic. For non-free plugins like AAC, and a whole bunch of other non-free packages, add:

to your /etc/apt/sources.list file. If you're running Sid, or Testing, change it accordingly. If you're on an architecture other than i386, or SPARC, you'll find more information at http://debian.video.free.fr/
