I notice that on http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable it links to pages with many ISO parts. Do I need to download all parts or just 1? e.g. debian-6.0.2.1-i386-DVD-1.iso
To simply have working Debian OS you need just 1 CD - either net-install .iso or CD image with DE like LXDE if you don't want wait while it installs DE using net-install or have slow network speed. Everything else is just extra stuff which can be downloaded from Debian itself using internet and synaptic|apt|software center|browser.

Thank you Arcane. So just to confirm that "debian-6.0.2.1-i386-CD-1.iso" at 648 megabytes will do for my install? Or even "debian-6.0.2.1-i386-DVD-1.iso" at 4.4 giga bytes?
I'd find it hard to connect my PC via cable to my router so I'd rather not use the netinstall ISO.

The net install iso is remarkably good at automagically setting up a net connection. That is my preferred way of installing Debian. CD 1 will do it for you just fine.
Doing the netinstall or cd-1 will also give you the latest updates upon installation, in other words, if you download everything from the beginning & install based on download & an update becomes available you'll have to update again.
