Question Making an Debian Etch repository

Hello friends,

I have with me Debian Etch 3 DVDs...
i have configured apt with 'apt-cdrom add' and its working fine too...

i was thinking of copying all those .deb files into /deb-repo/main and call it with file:/ in sources.list

i made Packages.gz like

#apt-ftparchive packages /deb-repo/main | gzip > /deb-repo/Packages.gz

and given in sources.list like

deb file:/deb-repo main/

but after this,
when i issue
aptitude search <somepackage>

its outputting
"couldnt stat source package list file"
its telling me to run 'apt-get update'

i am clueless of how to proceed...

thanking u all in anticipation....

You'd be better of using a Debian mirror online, so your packages are updated. If you want to make a local repository, read this: http://www.debian.org/mirror/ftpmirror

I'm trying to figure out why you would want such a repository. Frankly, a desire to try your hands on NFS isn't a viable reason IMO for keeping your system vulnerable because of outdated packages. I emphisize again: the packages on the CD and DVD are outdated, even if you downloaded it an hour ago!

@DutchMaster...
its nothing to do with security and all friend...
i am now using fedora 6 and debian etch...
i have created the YUM repository with aht available RPMS and its working pretty fine...

so i was thinking the same with .deb packages...

i read http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/re...pository-howto

but ... its not working...! just for the sake of making it work ..thats only... right now i have abt 13 GB of .deb packages.. so thought i must try to make a repository ...

on reading... found deb-ftparchive and related commands....

just for the sake of trying it out...thats it..!
thank you DutchMaster for replying...........
