make-kpkg options

If I want to compile an exact replica from source of a official debian kernal package what would I do?

I know I would grab the debian kernel-source package. Got it.
I know I would copy /boot/config-2.6.16-1-486 /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.16 done it.
make xconfig/menuconfig/whateverconfig
done it.

ok, now in the past what I would do here is change the things I wanted changed and compile successfully. In this case I wanted to make it a k6/k6II/k6III optimized kernel.

Back in early 2.6 kernels I compiled very cleanly, no probs. Since around 2.6.12 I've been getting assorted errors when I try to compile, or if it compiles and makes the package I can't boot that kernel.

It'd be fun to know how to make the resulting kernel.deb come out EXACTLY like the officials with the -1-k6, but mostly I just need to know why make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image wouldn't work with ONLY changing the processor type.

I discovered after posting this that I'd missed seeing a whole thread on compiling a debian kernel. I didn't find the answer to my question there, but uh... if this needs moved there would a mod please be so kind as to do so?
