[SOLVED] Major problems on boot and sound after updating to 2.6.30 (testing branch)

Hello all.

I am having some serious issues on my laptop after last nights update to 2.6.30.

a) My dmesg is full of kernel messages like this one, and I don't know what they mean so as to "decode" them.

I get ~20 of these warnings and they delay boot for 10+ seconds.

The problem goes away if I start the kernel with acpi=off parameter, but then I don't have cpufrequtils loaded, so the laptop gets very hot in seconds and ndiswrapper does not load (needed due to the lack of native linux driver for my wireless).

b) Sound levels on any app are at whispering level! I use alsa only (no pulseaudio) and all levels are maxed out in alsamixer.

After the update I had to redo the ndiswrapper and the virtualbox module again, so thats not an issue. And I did the bad move of removing the old kernel.

While writing this thread, I installed 2.6.26 from stable and I am going to give it a try in a sec.

Please help me, I need to have the laptop ready for my brother by tomorrow night.

Everything of the above is ok on 2.6.26.
I only got this at boot, but I don't use the touchpad anyway.

Some more info on the above.

Disabling acpi does not turn the wireless device on, as it is by default, not even by pressing its button.
And with no wireless device present, ndiswrapper is useless, so making a connection is impossible.

There is no way to check about irqs from the laptop's bios.

I removed the laptop's battery and every usb device connected (1 mouse), but no difference.

Sound is low even with acpi=off, so I guess it's something big inside the kernel

I just installed 2.6.31-rc6 from kernel archive. The strange messages do not appear on boot and it boots just fine and fast. So I just dismiss (not boot in it) 2.6.30 and I stand and wait until September for 2.6.31 final.

But the ultra low sound volume is still there, so I guess there is some change on how the kernel or alsa handles it. I remember it had made some new alsa related configuration files on the desktop pc.

Please focus on that problem.

I continue troubleshooting the sound issue.
Now that alsaconf does not exist anymore, is there some other way to set the prefered card?

I tried a live cd of sidux 2009.02 just to check about the sound problem.
And I had sound as usual and no error at boot!

So I went back to my installation and I installed the kernel .30-486 package from the just to see if any of the problems still occur there.

Oddly, it booted perfectly with no errors at all! Sound was at low levels but...

I opened up alsamixer to check the levels once more, having lost any hope and I found on the other end of the mixer 4 channels! I have never gone that far, since I only adjust Master or PCM.
Those 4 channels were on "mute" in kernels .30 and .31! I raised all of them to the max, although only the first one made the change audible, and I do have sound now!
