Madwifi Drivers

If I was to install Lenny on a Dell Inspiron laptop, how would I get the Package: madwifi-source installed during the installation? I would only have lenny's full cd/dvd, no wired connection to the internet.

It would have wireless dlink nic also.

This is the link showing all packages required. Would all of them be available on the cd/dvd disc?

Thnx.

I don't know about including madwifi in the installation but I use module-assistant to install the drivers.

Do you use module-assistant when the installation is finished? Are you doing this without internet connection or using a wired connection to get the files you would need?

Thnx.

madwifi

i use module assistant as well to install my drivers for a network card with mad-wifi.
I dont believe this is a file that comes stock on any of the basic install cdś, and if it was on one of the cdś, i wouldnt know which one, and i doubt it would be installed as a default package as some manual work is required to install and configure everything. Feel free for anyone to correct me, im just tryin to help this person and i mainly do net installs if i can(thats not to say i that havent been suckered into downloading all 8 cdś (at the time), and doing an install from them).

I have written up a little script for my laptop, as i got sick of redoing it each time a kernel upgrade came through etc(yeah im lazy. Next time i fire it up, ill post it here.

If it was me, i would probably look at downloading them manually and installing copy n install from a cd or flash drive etc, after the machine has been installed. there are only 1 or 2 files needed and then the madwifi howto to give you the right commands for module assistant.
Chances are, that if it is a newer card, you will have greater luck for support, if it is an older card, you may have better support/more functionality.....

From http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/Distro/Debian/MadWifi

$ su
# apt-get update
# apt-get install madwifi-source
# apt-get install madwifi-tools
# m-a prepare
# m-a a-i madwifi

But you must add the right apt sources to ur list.
If your doing it by cd or memory card as i suggest,

your best bet is to copy them onto the hdd first, something like
/usr/local/src/ or /home/user/
and then on a command line or terminal,
cd to where u copied them...
do a dpkg -i madwifi-sourceXXX
and the same for tools
then m-a prepare
then m-a a-i madwifi

I have found that a reboot may be needed for some pcmcia cards.
Sorry for crappin on a bit, but i hope this helps

you can use the jigdo search tool to see what CD or DVD a package is on.. a jigdo search for madwifi shows only the madwifi-tools package and not the source package, so madwifi-source is NOT available on any of the install media.
