LVM only lets me extend online but not reduce with ext3
Hi Everyone,

I have an encrpted LVM install with debian testing and ext3. I was running out of space yesterday on / so I reduced my /home/ and was able to extend my root partition.

It would not let me do the reduce online but would let me to lvextend online. I had to log on as root, unmount /home/ reduce it and extend /.

It said that this is not supported when I have read that LVM does support online reduce with ext3.

Thanks :)

There are two issues: Resizing the ext3 filesystem and resizing the logical volume

The one you bumped into was resize2fs, which cannot reduce a mounted ext3 filesystem.

From the resize2fs manpage:

...resize2fs... can be used to enlarge or shrink an unmounted file system located on device. If the filesystem is mounted, it can be used to expand the size of the mounted filesystem...

Hi WhatsHisName,

Thanks for your concise reply :) I guess I didnt think it though enough! Now I am going to try and find a way to online resize the FS

Thanks again :)
