lost apm after going to 2.6
I installed the kernel 2.6.8-2-386 in order to get my wireless card working with ndiswrapper. Now when I look in /proc I no longer see apm as I did when using kernel 2.4. Now I see acpi. The thing is I dont think that my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 1300 i series) supports acpi. The screen turns black when left untouched for a while which is good and everything shuts down ok, but I am unable to tell how much battery life I have left. When I was using apm I just checked in the terminal by typing 'cat /proc/apm' as I hadnt found a gui app to keep track of it yet. So I think that I may need to use apm unless someone could tell me of some other way to check my battery as I dont think this lappy supports acpi. I would appreciate any help.

lost apm
Take a look in LQ laptop and handheld forum. Several people there use debian on ur lappy and they use acpi. Good luck.

Ok, I'll take a look. Thanks for the reply.

I just searched the laptop section of LQ and google and couldnt find anything about my laptop being able to use acpi.
I did find the following about using apm instead of acpi in debian and was wondering if you thought this would work. Add acpi=off to the end of the kernel line in your grub or lilo configuration file. Then add the apm module to your /etc/modules list and install the apmd daemon. I am not exactly sure if this is the right thing to do or how to go about it though. So I am asking for others advice concerning going back to apm. |
The 1st entry in laptop forum(survey) leads to linux on laptop site where there is article on debian install on ur lappy, describing what is needed for acpi to work properly.

Thats a great site. I own two laptops that I use linux on so that will be very helpfull. Thanks for your help.
