looking for an IDE

hi folks....i am looking for a IDE (for compiling, debugging, assember, link, etc) that would work in the command line...sort of like how aptitude and dselect look and feel...i am not a big fan of the GUI, although i have fluxbox and windowmaker installed.....will Emacs do the trick??....i have seen screenshots of Emacs being used in KDE and Gnome but i don't and won't use those DE's cause it just reminds me too much of "Windoze" and the years of frutration over blue screens and crashing....lol....i like the command line and ms-dos look and feel.....guess i'm just an old dog who won't learn new tricks...lolol...any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated and welcomed...thanks
