logging out as user with xdm and woody

Hi everybody,

I have installed Debian Woody with fluxbox and 2.4 kernel on quite an old machine (32 MB RAM, 150 MHz). I hope my little sisters (9 years) can play games on it.

When they will start linux they will automatically get into fluxbox. But when they exit fluxbox they get a console and will have to get root permissions to shutdown the computer. I would prefer not to give them the root password. How can I let them shutdown the computer without getting root permissions? Best would be just from fluxbox.

Another problem: the computer won't be on internet for some time and it takes a lot of time for the kernel to boot if it does not detect the cable. Does anyone know a way to solve that?

Thanks!

Corien

Hmm... you've got a computer that people wouldn't usually call a "gaming machine".

I suggest you install GDM -- it has a face browser for selecting different users and it can be configured with a GUI tool in Fluxbox (# gdmsetup) to allow normal users to reboot or halt computer from GDM.

The method used in adding the Fluxbox session to GDM depends on the GDM version that Woody has, but it probably involves adding a startup script to /etc/gdm/Sessions/ or someplace like that. Check the other scripts in that directory -- it shouldn't be overly difficult. Somewhere under /etc/ or /etc/gdm/ there's a config file (gdm.conf) where you can further edit how GDM behaves. Find some cute images for your sisters to be used in the GDM face browser and they'll like it. Too bad the pingus game quite likely won't run on your computer.

That should do it, but it's a shame you can't shutdown as user with xdm...

Indeed don't think tuxracer and stuff will run, it doesn't even run properly on my computer, alltough I have quite a modern computer (bought half a year ago). Tuxracer runs disgusting on my computer: shocks, about 2 frames per second I guess. Would my graphics-card be too bad? I don't really have a gaming computer... I have a riva tnt2 32 MB (yes this card could be a bit old, but the rest of my computer is really new, well, except for the keyboard, the screen (about 2 years old), my boxes, and, er, no really, the rest is new ).

My sisters don't need heavy games. They mostly play games you can play for free on the internet.

Thanks for the advice!

Corien
