LMDE-- Ubuntu packages in the repository???
 

What the hey??? I was looking to install Virtualbox via Synaptic the other day and I found a package with "~Ubuntu~lucid" next to the latest version.

I have all confidence in the Mint team and I'm sure they scrutinized these packages for compatibility, but a little disclaimer would have been nice. I do not want any Ubuntu packages on my system. The least they could do was package the source code into a pure .deb.

LMDE is not "pure Debian" by any stretch of the imagination.

Why not install direct from virtualbox.org if you have concerns?

I don't have concerns per se. I'm just not too happy to see Lucid packages in the repository. I just didn't install the package.

I was under the impression that LMDE pulled from the vanilla "testing" repo's, though evidently I'm wrong.

Check /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and you will see that LMDE uses both the Debian Testing and Linux Mint repositories (Linux Mint of course is based on Ubuntu).

If you want "vanilla" Debian you should just install Debian, and if you want "vanilla" VirtualBox you can install it from virtualbox.org (in fact I prefer this method since the "PUEL" version has USB support while the "OSE" version in the Debian repos does not).

I don't think this is something you need to worry about.

It is not the first time i have seen that something related to Ubuntu was found in name/infos/other-stuff.
It does not say that the package is not "fully" debian qualified. (one could simply have forgotten to rename it after the build, or perhaps even left that "hint" with purpose).

Also some developers work for Debian and Ubuntu and there sure is -at least kind of- a teamwork in several areas.

There is a debian virtualbox-version, lmde uses the debian repo and you should be able to install it like usual:

Perhaps have a look at /etc/apt/preferences or even /etc/apt/apt.conf

Not really true, they don't use the Mint repositories, they have extra repositories for the stuff they use in LMDE, that are not standard Mint repositories.
But as already stated, use the Virtualbox-repositories, this way you will not only get the PUEL version, but also the latest version (4.0.0 instead of 3.2.12).
