Linux woody and sarge

Hello all,

A question from a Linux-newbie here. I have Linux woody on cd-roms. But I have not installed it yet. What are the possibilities open to me? Can i install woody and then upgrade? Or is it better to download sarge and install it? Can someone give advice on that one, please.

Greetings,
Pitlo

Yes you can update very easily

However, the debian installer has come on leaps and bounds since woody and is not as user hostile, so if you want an easier 'introduction' during installation, I would go sarge.

Basically you can upgrade everything else except the filesystem. If you install Woody with ext2 and you later on wish to change to reiserfs, you need to reinstall Debian. It's also likely that upgrading leaves some old and unnecessary files to your system. If you're going to upgrade to Sarge anyway, I don't see any point in installing Woody. You'll get a cleaner system and avoid unnecessary work if you start with a fresh Sarge installation. But, as I said, upgrading from Woody to Sarge is a possible option -- if that's the way you choose to go.
