Question libpthread 2.28 / Xorg 1.20.4 - Segmentation Fault

Good morning.

After the latest full-update, yesterday, Xorg crashes at startup with a segmentation fault:

As I appear to be the only one on the Web with this phenomenon, PSE ask me for
more details and tell me also, where I have to look for them. Let us pretend
that I am dumb.

TIA

Potentially “Solved” in a way.

The computer in question is a HP Pavillion Notebook. For two or three years, we use a USB-keyboard as most of the keys on the notebook are dysfunctional. The DVD writer does not work for an unknown time-span, as we had not much use for it and I only noticed the failure a while ago.

The operating system is booted from an external disk, since it is no longer read when connected to the internal IDE bus. I am doing this for a year or so.

In short. This notebook is dying a slow death but very reluctantly.

This evening I booted from the external disk, but connected to a different notebook and everything worked as before, i.e. the X-server starts up normally and especially no segmentation fault is reported in the logs or elsewhere.

Now, I do not now anything for sure. The initial post in this thread was written in vi as called from w3m on a Debian terminal. And my mailer is mutt; so most of what I do anyway will continue to be possible on that HP Pavillion... But I deem it highly probable, that the graphics card is giving up.

Do correct me, if you consider my conclusion false.

If you want to pursue this you could show us 'lspci -k' and the full Xorg.0.log. If it's not dying hardware.

It's not that old. 8,9 years?
But there's some sort of hybrid graphics in there. Intel with AMD. Tricky, I guess. You could try checking if that is set up properly; or you could try disabling the AMD card completely in BIOS.
My experience with opensource one-size-fits-all GPU drivers is that, the older the card is, the buggier the driver is. So maybe the proprietary AMD driver would help. Or maybe radeon + some firmware.

Thank You again.

For the time I have been unable to connect to the AMD site to simply check the available drivers that are proposed for Linux. All the information I have comes from the duckduckgo search result... I will try this on a different computer, but exclude for now that there is an addditional, selective, network bug that closes me out from AMD... But heg. I have seen it all, by now.

Darned SOLVED.

[Double-SOLVED]
[Super-Solved]

Ey...” This is SOoooooo solved, I could cry.

Having put a Lenovo on top of the HP Laptop for a while, it had not been strictly necessary, to boot from the external disk.
I updated the (external system) however and noticed that way that the boot-partition was too small for a new initial ramdisk... As, this time, there were not even some old useless files slobbing around, I could not remedy the problem in my usual manner.

That was it. I mean..,

Pushing away all the other partitions on the disk and making more space for the boot-partition solved “the problem”. Seems like I had not understood what “the problem” was in the first place.

TY for your attention. Continue please, there is nothing to see, here...
