lenny sound issue - sound skips when playing file

I had to replace the main harddrive in my system and I just installed lenny on this system, it was running sarge. No upgrade to the OS and no hardware change other than the harddrive swap, a complete new OS install on working hardware.

I installed ALSA and mpg123 to play mp3 files at the command line. When I play the files, any mp3, it skips at the end of the file. The sound file plays just fine until the end. When it ends it skips and replays the last 1/2 second of the audio.

I'm setting up some sound files to play for event to let you know when something has happened. On sarge the sound didn't skip like this but with lenny it does and sounds horrible.

Any ideas what could make this happen? Any setting that needs changed?
