I have installed debian lenny with Gnome, but the sound is extremely quiet for all applications.
volume is already on max, but still quiet.
btw. the sound from windows installed on the same hardware works well.

Try turning off anything you don't require in alsamixer like microphone, line, aux, and stuff. The two that should be on are Master & PCM(s) in the output section.
What kind of sound device/card are you using?
The command: lspci should show if you're not sure.
