Laptop Sleep Mode does not work after update
 

On an old pentium P6200 laptop system I am running Jessie with Gnome 3.14.1 desktop. It has worked just fine for years. Last night I let it run updates and now the sleep mode does not work.

If I press Fn F3, or close the lid it now powers off. The Tweak tool power settings seem to have no effect.

Any ideas what could have been changed?

... sadly, many things come to mind ... Number one on the list is a kernel update.

Support for power management, particularly on older hardware, is something that can vary greatly from one version of the kernel to the next. Been there many times.

It will take a lot of troubleshooting to figure out how to fix the suspend feature - and in the end, it may just not work. Undoing the update, or at least the kernel update (assuming there was one ...) might be a good way to start. Be mindful of dependencies ...

Thanks for the reply Rickkk. I do not think that there was a kernal update. I am pretty sure that it has always been at 3.16.0.

What would be non-kernal number 2 and 3 on your list to check?

If I can't get the suspend working I will have to reload the O.S. I use this machine for programming Arduino's, ESP's, and PLC's and am always moving it around. Having to reboot continuously will not work. I would hate to have to reload because I really have this machine set up how I like it.

I just noticed that when I press the suspend it is shutting off the screen but not entering suspend mode. However, I cannot find a way, other than rebooting, to get the screen back on.

OK ... troubleshooting this could be a challenge, but here goes ..

Most of the time I've run into such a problem, and after determining that it wasn't due to a kernel update, it has had to do with networking, mostly wireless.

Could you try shutting down your networking : disconnect, set adapter down, eventually unload driver, in that order, and try suspending after each action ?

Let us know if it has yielded any positive results.
