ktorrent firewalled??How to unfirewall it??

Ok..Im trying to get better download speed form Ktorrent.I have my router port forwarded and setup right.Under windows it has always worked fine using utorrent.I setup static IP under Debian and that works.I did have trouble doing that using Gnome. For some reason I never could get static IP to work under gnome. But now with Kde it took a minute to get it working. But thats another thread.Problem is when i set up Ktorrent and enter my ports that I have setup.I still get the icon at bottom about being firewalled.Under windows I would always just disable windows firewall and just relied on my routers firewall.Im not up on Linux and iptables. Is this a built in firewall like windows xp has??Is it safe to disable it and rely on my routers firewall.Isnt a hardware firewall better than a software firewall??how do I set it up so that ktorrent isnt firewalled? Is it commandlne or is there a GUI to it?On my router I have port forwards named Utor.since thats what i was using under windows.Name matter? Not sure If i should have posted it here or under Linux-security..

You could man iptables. You could install shorewall and use that. Or you could do what I do.

I install firestarter. On kde I do kdesu firestarter &. On Gnome you can just use the shortcut in the menu because by default it does gksu firestarter.

Go through the wizard.

Once done, go to the policy tab and right click the bottom box and choose to add rule. In the drop down click bit torrent. The Ktorrent default tcp/ip port of 6881 is there, but you can add the udp too (think it's 4444, check in Ktorrent preferences.)

Once doing that you can close Firestarter and not worry about seeing it again. Some folks like to have it run on startup (by default, not only does the GUI not start but without tinkering with its scripts it doesn't start successfully with the system).

It doesn't matter though. Firestarter has made its adjustments to the iptables netfilter firewall rules and your torrents should work properly.

I open kdesu firestarter & and in the preferences put a check in ICMP filtering. Makes ShieldsUp! happy.

ok..seems to have worked..went ahead and and changed port forward range in router to 6881-6889.Instead of changing Ktorrents. And added 4444 to firestarter.I went to legal torrents and downloaded a torrent to test.It dosent show the firewall blocked icon and its hitting around 700/KB's..So now at least I know if im downloading a torrent and its doing it at around 25-30KB's I know its the torrent and not on my end now..thanks..
