Talking Knoppix user thoroughly lost!

Hi,
Just finished installing Knoppix 3.2 in a cold sweat after a few days of CD-boot sessions. Pulled partitions on Win98 once and for all and bulldozed ahead with Knoppix as my only OS.Now,the fear sets in.
One-my CD drives were detected just fine, but didn't show up as icons on my desktop.Any way to place this convenience there? On a related note, can any Knoppix users tell me if there is a GUI control panel like WIN98 had?
Two- On install,I just said YES to any packages Knoppix wanted to activate at startup. As a semi-casual desktop user, did I really need Mailserver,Samba etc.autoloaded or did I just slow my startup down?
Any assistance would be appreciated-thanks in advance!

have you tried the 'unmount' command?

go to terminal and type:

umount /mnt/cdrom

hopefully that will solve your problem.

Ummmm..
unmounting it let me take the CD out, but now the icon still shows a lock and it won't let me mount it again! Bizarre, isn't it?

Hi order99,

Did you rightclick on the icon to unmount it or did you umount it from a terminal?
A right-click usually does the trick quite nicely and triggers the icon to change its state to unmounted.

Are you sure you're not trying to mount a music cd?
They cannot be mounted, see...

Cheers,
Jan

As root do 'rebuildfstab' . then as normal user do 'mkdesktophdicons' should restore icons for all hd partitions as they looked on the live cd.

I did not encounter any significant slowing down of my system with these at startup.

Also I suggest you post to the knoppix forum(www.knoppix.net/forum) as they will know more about the distro.
