Keyboard Prob After Recompiling Kernel

I'm trying to figure this out on my own, but I thought I'd seek some imput to help me along. When I installed Debian 3.0r1, I had some trouble getting x-window-system and windowmaker working and thought it might be my nVidia TNT2 M64 card, so I decided to recompile the kernel and use the nVidia ".run" file that's mentioned here. Everything seems to be working, but when I recompile the kernel, my 104-key USB keyboard stops working. I think its a simple misconfiguration when I "make menuconfig," but I guess I am asking, 'Am I going about this the right way?' and Are there any suggestions?'" I used these two sites, here and here, to guide me.

Thanks,

--GT

Foot,

Thanks for the link. I didn't see my keyboard mentioned under devices, so it could be a problem of not being supported. But I'm still perusing the site.

In the mean time, I playing with my system and narrowed down the problem a little. I tried reinstalling Woody without recompiling the kernel. I installed x window system and fluxbox. When I enter as root and then exit fluxbox, there are a few errors regarding the generic imPS/2 mouse and keyboard using "legacy" drivers. Shortly afterward exitting fluxbox, the keyboard dies. I had enough time to type one letter of my user name to reenter flux box as the regular user. The keyboard works fine during installation and in Fluxbox. It only quits afterwards.

I should mention that I installed a pretty barebones system to start and skipped Tasksel and Dselect. I only have the dependencies included during installation and when I do the apt-get install plus a few others, so it might be a missing dependency. I also have the kernel framebuffer disabled. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Well, I don't have any experience with usb keyboards, but I would suggest checking out the log file in /var/log (e.g. /var/log/xdm.log, /var/log/kern.log, etc.) to help debug this problem.

Foot,

The logs were a bit long, so I uploaded them to here. Thanks for the help. Anyone else feel free to take a look.

Thanks,

I clicked on "Linux Logs", and it says the folder is empty. Although the screen that lists the folders says that there's three items in the folder. ??? Well, I'll just check out your Japan trip then.

hehehe Feel free to look. I have about 2,000 more of those. I was there for six months.

It shows as three files there, but I had a friend test it just now and it was still empty. Let me play with it and I'll get back to you.

Thanks,

[Edit: There's xdm.log, kern.log, and XFree86.0.log. Sorry for the multiple posts, Mods. I got tired of fooling with Yahoo.)

Wow that sure is a mouth full! Here my theory: the Linux-usb guide mentions that often usb keyboards don't need kernel support. The support is actually provided by the BIOS. Well, I think that at first X uses the BIOS support and then breaks it, but your kernel doesn't have usb hid support, so you end up losing your keyboard. You can quickly verify the validity of this hypothesis my checking for the existing of the /proc/bus/usb directory or 'lsmod | grep hid'.

Foot,

Sorry again for the long, multiple posts. I just got tired of fooling with my Yahoo briefcase. Your hypothesis was correct. I looked once again on the Linux USB site and it seems as though adding a line to my fstab file will correct this. So far, this seems to have corrected my problem, but if you think this is an egregious error, please correct me.

I also wanted to ask you something off-topic. What's the little utility with the clock in the screenshot included in your signature? I've been trying to find one now that I'm sporting fluxbox, and I don't know what to search under.

Thanks for all the help! I appreciate it.

It's called GkrellM. It's a really cool program and includes theme and plugin support. In that shot I'm using the "Egan" theme but modified a bit, and the clock is a plugin called aLLtraX. Gkrellm is just the coolest little program. As you can see from the shot, it also includes hardware sensor monitoring support. Check it out!
