keyboard layout (alternative key with mode_switch)

Hello all,

I used to be able to type alternative characters with the mode_switch key (mapped to my win key). For example, I could press MODE_SWITCH+2 to get a superscript 2. And MODE_SWITCH+D to get a D-bar... etc. I couldn't do that anymore after reinstalling Debian. I can still use the COMPOSE key, however, to get the characters, for example, COMPOSE,^,2 gives me a superscript 2. But this is more typing. Any idea how I can get my symbols back?

Thanks in advance!

You might have some luck reading up on xmodmap.

umm.. But I didn't do anything before and it came out working by default. So I am thinking maybe I could just choose a locale/keymap with 3rd-level symbols. I don't know which one.

Thanks for the help.
