kernel versions

My kernel-headers directories are named 2.4.26-1-386 and 2.4.26-1-386. /lib/modules/VERSION/build points to kernel-headers-2.4.26-1.

But my synaptic menu says (on the line with "kernel-headers-2.4.26-1"): installed version 2.4.26-6, latest version 2.4.26-6.

The kernel-source file I just installed is named kernel-source-2.4.26.
There's no "-1" or "-6". Yet on that line in the synaptic menu it says again: installed version 2.4.26-6 and latest version 2.4.26-6.

Why the discrepancy between the -1 and the -6?

I guess my version is -6, right?

uname -r
that will tell u your precise kernel version. the *-1* is just used for all the kernel packages. the latest version means there were some updates, but they don't actually change the package name to reflect the update. i think they should take the -1 out of the package name...i don't see why it's necessary (maybe a compatibility modifier).
