Exclamation Kernel upgrade: Unable to handle kernel paging request

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to do a kernel upgrade of Debian testing. It is running in VPC 6 on Mac OS X 10.3. I did apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.26-1-686, followed the instructions, added the initrd line to lilo.conf, wrote lilo, and rebooted. On boot, after decompressing the kernel, I get a few screens of this error:

"Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 000012c7"

Then, VPC says that an "Unrecoverable processor error has occurred", and forces a restart of the VM. I can boot fine from 2.4.18 which was what was installed with the net-install.

Thanks for any help!

VPC emulates a complete x86 system with a PII processor, so the G4 shouldn't come into play (it's not a G5 )

why don't you install debian native to your comp? can you dual boot a Mac? I have no idea, but the system would run much better native, and debian has ppc images.

I'm going to be setting up a few public workstations with web and openoffice access, and they are all x86 based. I'm hoping that once I'm done, I can just dd the contents of the image over and have a working system, and if not at least have all of the configuration done. I could dual boot my system, but I would need to reformat, and I love being able to have all my apps open while I'm working on the image.

The main reason I want to upgrade the kernel is for security patches, etc. Is there an easier way to do just the security fixes, avoiding the whole problem?
