Kernel upgrade, now no sound!
I just upgraded my kernal from 2.6.7 to 2.6.12. Sound was working for everything before and now nothing. When I rebooted with the new kernel, everything seems to load fine including all of the alsa-snd modules. I even get sound when gdm starts Gnome and then nothing. No Gnome sounds and XMMS and Rhythmbox both error out with "cannot cause playback".
If I run esd at the command line I get: /dev/dsp: No such file or directory I also ran alsaconf again just to see and it completes without errors and I even get some pops from the speakers during the configuration and then nothing... Thoughts or ideas of where I can start? Thanks in advance! |
/dev/dsp: No such file or directory - That means you didn't load the alsa-oss module. I don't have a /dev/dsp either because I've given up on OSS. Most apps can be configured to use ALSA. Xmms, for instance, should have and ALSA plugin that it can use for output.

Maybe try installing gstreamer0.8-alsa and using the ALSA output plugin for XMMS. Check that you have kernel support (you should, if alsaconf ran OK).

The snd modules for both the mixer and pcm-oss (alsa-oss modules) "should" have been loaded but were not... I can modprobe both and then I can at least get a sound from esd at the command line. (I'm using gstreamer with esdsink for my audio on Gnome to get "everything" working.) I have a place to start! I can get sound from XMMS and Rhythmbox (and my other applications) if I disable Gnome sounds... I worked for a long time getting them running with 2.6.7.... I'll see what else I can work out! Thanks again. |
