kernel panic: tried to kill init

So yeah...when I boot into a 2.6 kernel, it complains with the following error message:

Kernel panic: Tried to kill init!

How do I solve this? I want to try the 2.6 kernel out! =(

Thanks in advance!

Can you provide more details? I can't help you if I don't know what the cause of the kernel panic is.

That's just it...I don't know what the cause of the kernel panic is. All it tells me is that it's trying to kill init, the source of which I don't know. Is there a way to view the system startup log? If so, I'll post that next time.

Can you tell me what kind of computer you are using?
If you are using a laptop or something, I could give you some help with that:
at the bootmenu, go to the entry that boots into the 2.6 kernel and type 'e' If I'm correct, you should be seeing the commands that the bootloader uses to boot your Debian. Under commands or something similar, I forgot, edit it, adding:

acpi=off pnpbios=off noapic noapm

Once again, some more information about your computer would help.

Thanks anyway, I compiled my own and it boots fine now.

Oh yeah, and I forgot... If there are any messages leading up to the kernel panic, you could post that to.

Oh. well.
