kernel panic and i cant fix it.

I installed debian sarge with the newest net install then i downloaded kernel 2.6.7 from kernel.org. I did not install the kernel the debian way, i didnt think it mattered that much. I triple checked that the all the fs were in the kernel. But i keep getting this no matter what i have done.

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda2" or unkown-block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: root VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

The stupid part is hda2 is not on (0,0) its on (0,1), I have looked to see if I have made a mistake some where along the line, and on acident put down (0,0) some where i havent found it yet. I will show you what menu.lst looks like in a sec. Does anyone know how to fix this. Or am i even looking in the right area.

You also have to compile IDE support into the kernel if you want to get rid of the initrd (if you use IDE HDD that is) Perhaps you have forgotten to check that? I'll bet they are still compiled as modules, and then you get the kernel panic as you mentioned

haha i'm not that dumb. Checks config. F**k!!!! I think you hit it, You learn something new every compile. Well thanks, Its the first time i decided not to use initrd. I am recompiling right now. I hope there are no more problems.
