Exclamation kernel-image generates Kernel Panic

I have recently reinstalled Debian 3.0 testing/unstable on a machine.
After doing some upgrade i was about to install a new kernel-image and got a Kernel Panic.

I did
Code:
apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.25-1-686
And then added following to /etc/lilo.conf
Code:
initrd=/initrd.img
In /etc/lilo.conf: boot points to /dev/hda and root points to /dev/hda3 as it should.
And then i ran "lilo" and everything seemed fine.

When i rebooted i got a kernel panic, here are the last lines:
Code:
VFS: Mounted root (cramfs filesystem).
VFS: Cannot open root device "303" or 03:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:03
Any ideas how to solve this?

i have checked the vmlinuz and initrd.img symlinks and they point to the right location.
I have installed several machines in a similar way, but never run in to this problem..

what filesystem are you using. your kernel might not be configured to use yours. It sounds like a kernel configuration problem. as a rule of thumb I always configure my own kernel before using it. While having generic hardware support works most of the time, it is not usually the best way to run linux. Configuring the kernel for your computer will make it run faster and more stable most of the time. It also will probably keep kernel panics from happening once you know how to do it right. Read up on configuring the kernel before you try so you can avoid errors and get it all right. Additionanlly if you run make menuconfig you can press ? to get help about the different option within the config.
