Unhappy Kernel cross-compile problems

I've got everything setup in my config file and I'm trying to cross-compile this kernel for amd64 (because if I compile normally, the kernel ends up being for i686 and not amd64, even though I specify my processor type as k8/athlon in the kernel config). However, when I run this command:

Code:
harima:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.10# make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-sawachika --arch amd64 --cross-compile kernel_image

It starts prompting me for every single kernel option. When I don't cross-compile, it reads the .config file fine. In #debian I was told to do "make ARCH=amd64 config" but that does not work either. I'm at a loss about what to do, and I definitely don't want to input all the kernel options I already set again. Does anyone know why it's not reading my .config and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance.

Alright, apparently I was wrong about the above. It is reading my config file, but it asks me a few extra options (~10 or so) for some reason. So that's no problem, I can answer those. But then after that the make refuses to build and gives me this error:

Code:
  CC scripts/mod/empty.o
/bin/sh: line 1: --config-gcc: command not found
make[3]: *** [scripts/mod/empty.o] Error 127
make[2]: *** [scripts/mod] Error 2
make[1]: *** [scripts] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.10'
make: *** [stamp-kernel-configure] Error 2

I swear the heavens are trying to stop me from compiling this kernel. Anyone have a clue what's wrong this time?

Alrighty. Well I ran `dpkg-reconfigure gcc` since that's all I could think of and couldn't find anything useful from googling. And it seems to have fixed it! Only now....

Code:
  CC scripts/mod/empty.o
/bin/sh: line 1: kernel_image-gcc: command not found
make[3]: *** [scripts/mod/empty.o] Error 127
make[2]: *** [scripts/mod] Error 2
make[1]: *** [scripts] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.10'
make: *** [stamp-kernel-configure] Error 2

Why? WHY!?!? What is this freaking empty.o that keeps failing! And what is kernel_image-gcc? Urgh, this is so frustrating.

Heh...

I admire your determination.

BTW..in the two hours you spent working on this you could have had a 64 bit distro up and running. Not mocking you or anything.
Just grinning at your determination. Good luck.

One other thing for you that I bumped into the other day. Slamd64...unofficial Slackware port. Runs 32 bit code nicely as well. I know that was a previous concern for you.
