Unhappy Kernel 2.6.3 and PPPOE

Hi all,

I'm trying to configure PPPOE on my debian (woody) 3.0r1 box, but am having not much luck. I've been through the same process before using the standard 2.2 kernel that is installed along with this version, and I had much more luck that time. I just configured it using PPPOECONF and the ADSL connection came up fine.

Since then, I've reinstalled debian as I discovered the original install was not completed properly. I've compiled a 2.6.3 kernel for my machine and it all seems to be working ok - made sure I included pppoe support. However, when I try to bring the dsl connection up this time and check /var/log/messages, it reports the following information:

...pppd[505]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
...pppd[505]: Serial connection established

It just sits at this line, occasionally ticking over with the same "Serial connection established" message.

/etc/network/interfaces is as follows:

---------------------------
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# added by debian
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.254

# manually added by me
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet ppp
provider dsl-provider
------------------------------------

If I check ifconfig after starting the dsl connection, all the above adapters are shown, but there is no ppp0 adapter listed.

I know there needs to be a ppp0 adapter - when I had this working before, one was automatically created. I have a feeling that this may be caused by a component I've missed during the kernel config. I checked what I had selected during the config, and I definitely compiled the kernel with both ppp support, and pppoe support.

I've tried trawling google for help with this, but I'm stumped. I have a bit of a clue, but I'm still a linux newbie when it comes to stuff like this. If anyone can help, please do!

Thanks,
Guy

I don't see how that would make a difference, as I can't even connect to my ISP yet. I did check it out though, and the correct nameservers are there.

I tried pon (no 'dsl-provider') with the same problem. poff works also.

After these lines:

...pppd[505]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
...pppd[505]: Serial connection established

I believe it should be displaying something like:

pppd[1389]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/7
pppd[1389]: local IP address 203.123.x.x
pppd[1389]: remote IP address 203.123.x.x

I really think it has something to do with the ppp0 adapter not loading, but I don't know why it's not.

Can anyone confirm for me which ppp options I need to compile into the kernel? Probably the only ppp related option I didn't compile in was 'ppp support for async serial ports', as I figured this didn't relate to pppoe, but correct me if I'm wrong??

Also, I should probably clarify that I have my modem correctly set up in bridging mode. As I said, I used to have this working correctly, and none of my hardware settings have changed (that goes for the PC as well).
