keeping Xorg 6.8.1 from being upgraded

Hi,

I have Xorg 6.8.1 custom compiled for my Graphic Hardware and I have installed GNOME from testing repo and I am using kernel 2.6.16.

Now my question is very simple.

How do I make sure that apt-get/dpkg never installs Xorg package from the debian repos. Right now when I list the packages installed(dpkg --get-selections) it does not show Xorg is installed because I have compiled the Xorg from (freedesktop.xorg) so the Debian system thinks that Xorg is not installed.

So what do I have to do so that my customed compiled Xorg is never upgraded nor installed by Debian packaging system

Thanks

Use the "equivs" package to create a "placeholder" package and install that. I'm not up on the details of exactly how to do it, though.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

what about the 'hold' status?

Hold would probably be the way to go..

echo "package_name hold" | dpkg --set-selections

Yeah I agree, but in my case the package is not installed on my system(atleast this is what dpkg/apt-get thinks), so will the hold method still work?

ACtually, the equivs suggestion may have merit.
See the following:
