kdm gui does not load beyond login page

I have installed debian squeeze and everything has been going fine for a couple of weeks. Today, after not booting for a couple of days, on the boot up during the command line the OS forced a check of hla1 and found an inconsistency in several blocks. Then the first discrepancy in KManger where I was not presented with any options on login in the bottom left of the screen, (I have kde and other session desktops). Only a login screen with the default Debian background. After login I was left with just the default Debian background.
Any suggestions?

On a second point, I want to keep my system clean and have been using Xfce, I want to purge Xfce and use icewm. Can someone instruct me how to completely remove Xfce.
