kdenlive on usb flash will not reboot or shutdown

I downloaded and installed the kdenlive demo iso.to a 4g datatraveleler usb flash. The debian system boots and works great as usual, but I cannot reboot or shutdown. I must use the hard reset button on the desktop to shutdown. I just get a stalled system with the desktop background showing. I can log off and back on (automatically). have not tried to add usr's yet.

update to live usb will not shutdown or reboot

Downloaded and installed the debian-live-usb-20090702.x64.img. It boots and the persistant partition and home partition appears to work.

When I select shutdown or reboot, I get a clean background and cannot continue.
ctl+alt+backspace == no response
ctl+alt+f1 == console

I tried "real, seamen, entertain, in, underwater, bunkers" ie: alt+sysreq+r,s, e,i,u,b.
result == response to all except the last alt+sysreq+b ==no response
ctl+alt+del gives response but the system hangs with:

"cannot execute /sbin/sulogin"
Id "z6" respawning too fast disabled for 5 min.

After 5 min the respawning message is repeated.

Can I edit the shutdown script??? I will need consise directions as to where the script is and how to edit it.

Desktop amd64, dual core. running xp, mepis, and recently debian lenny.

Sounds like a apm or acpi or apic problem ,maybe

what debian boot cheatcodes are you using?/?

Not to experienced at this, but I believe it can be resolved....

shutdown script might be in /etc/rc*.d and /etc/init.d

The boot stanza :
/live/vmlinuz/ initrd=/live/initrd1.img boot=live persistant username=kdenlive hostname=kdenlive.org union=aufs

I poked around in /etc/init.d and /etc/rc*.d....There is a /etc/rcs.d and the readme refers to /etc/init.d "readme" which in turn ref's the debian policy manual....whewww I breifly checked the policy manual, but its way over my head.

could someone point me to the logs??? I don't read them, but it seems they were in /etc/x11 years ago and I cannot find them. dmesg looks clean.
