KDE Wireless - Automatic connection

When I load up KDE on my laptop, I always have to manually connect to my router using KNetworkManager. Is there a way to tell Debian to pick my router (specifiy SSID) and then submit the WPA password to the router so that when the laptop boots up there is no need to enter the password?

I was struggling with this a couple of weeks ago - the only solution I came up with is to use Configfile to store keys instead of KWallet - it's unencrypted but my whole hard drive is encrypted with dm-crypt so f**k it

You could try ceni (apt-get install ceni).

It's a console/terminal based app but very, very easy to use and it sets it all up for you.
You can choose your encryption method , whether or not to have it auto start on boot or not (or hotplugging).

I struggled getting my wireless connection going til someone on sidux forums mentioned ceni and a couple of minutes later I had wireless up and running.

Run this command if using wpa2:

wpa_passphrase <your_essid> <your_passphrase>

And replace the the essid and passphrase with the one specified in your router (without the < > )
And this will give you an encrypted passphrase you can enter into ceni.

Failing that there is wpa-gui.

A couple of things worth reading:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...eless+security
http://manual.sidux.com/en/internet-...#netcardconfig

The ubuntu guide gives you plenty of info on how to do it manually.
Ceni basically does all those steps for you.

I hated KNetworkManager
Debian is easy to set up by editing the /etc/network/interfaces file.
Mine looks like this:
Quote:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
wpa-passphrase mysecretpassphrase
wpa-ssid Name_of_my_Wireless_AP
wireless-channel 11
See man interfaces for more information

Oh.

My assumption was that as Kubuntu is based on Debian, that Debian would work the same way.
Maybe I am wrong.

Anyway, try creating the file and copy & paste (with appropriate modifications) my entries.
Make sure you include the first two lines (the "loopback" interface), or you may break your system.
Then reboot, or restart networking services, whichever you are happier with.

What's this wlan0_rename business?
