Kde 3,5 automounting usb on desktop

I have trtied everything I can to get this to work. Basically what i want is to plug in my usb drive (/dev/sda1) and have an icon appear on the desktop to which I can click so it monts and opens in konqueror. In konqueror I go to media:/ and plug it in and nothing happens. I generally have to mount it by hand which is really annoying. I have udev hotplug hal all installed and from from the stable tree. Anyone have any ideas? do i need to configure autofs/automount? and if so how/what? If i add an entry into fstab manually kde picks up that there is a device there. Does autofs/automount interface with fstab? It seems there are 30 different ways to do this all I want is one clean and simple one. Any advice/help would be great.

Well SUSE 10.0 does that automatically for me, so maybe you can find out how SUSE does it and copy their way.
